Don't Blow & Drive

Remember "Kitt", the car in the t.v. series Knight Rider that could talk and drive itself? Well, researchers at Stanford University in California have developed a vehicle they call Stanley that uses sensors, cameras, lasers and on-board computers to navigate a 132-mile course through the Nevada desert. Stanley, however, is old news.

Now they are creating Junior, a modified VW Passat that can steer itself through a busy city. A lot of the technology for Junior is already in place because modern cars are stuffed full of robot-like gadgets to help deal with modern driving -- GPS, blind-sport sensors, cruise control, lane-departure warnings, and cameras to help you parallel park are common.

"By 2030 we should be able to deploy this technology on the open highway, and reliability will exceed that of humans by orders of magnitude," said Professor Sebastien Thrun.

This is way cool, but lets hopes the whiz kids at Stanford can get cars to the point where they drive themselves a lot sooner than 2030. Why? Think about it ... if cars can drive themselves then that makes having sex on the road safe! Just set the old cruise control and leave the drivin' to whoever built your car while you and your partner take care of more -- much more -- ... ahem ... "important things".

The future is looking good.

Bat Demon

Men in parts of Tanzania's main city, Dar es Salaam, are living in fear of a night-time sex attacker. A BBC correspondent says the attacks are being blamed by some on a demon called "Popo Bawa" meaning winged bat.

Some men are staying awake or sleeping in groups outside their homes. Others are smearing themselves with pig's oil, believing this repels attacks. Mbaruku Ibrahim, who hails from Zanzibar, says the story of the demon is common there and people in his village on Pemba island sleep beside a huge fire outside their houses whenever it is said to appear.

The story goes that the bat is able to transform itself into a man at night and it has also been blamed for rapes of women.

91% Oppose Sex-Toy Ban

There's an Alabama state law against selling sex toys, but to say that law is unpopular with the public would be a gross understatement, at least in Decatur, Alabama. The Decatur Daily newspaper recently polled its readers with the following online question:

"Do you agree with Alabama's ban on the sale of sex toys?" the two-day, unscientific poll asked. People could vote from anywhere. Of 191 respondents, 174 (a whopping 91.1%) answered "no". Seventeen answered "yes".

"I don’t get it," one reader wrote in an e-mail. "They want to ban sex toys, but sell guns on every street corner. When was the last time anyone was murdered with a vibrating banana?"

He voted "no", as did the following reader: "I feel that the government has no right to ban these items,” wrote the reader. "What a couple wants to do in their bedroom is no business of anyone."

Sherri Williams, owner of Pleasures adult toy shops in Decatur and Huntsville, Alabama, and others challenged the sex-toy ban in court.

On Valentine’s Day, the 11th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals ruled that the law is constitutional because “the state’s interest in preserving and promoting public morality provides a rational basis” for it.

-- Wow! It sounds like somebody's state government is way out of touch with the public, at least on the issue of selling sex-toys. A majority like 91% on any issue is almost unheard of in the U.S. And the state must be losing a lot of tax revenues by not allowing sex toys to be sold. But I did like that line about the "vibrating banana", hehehe!
